Two products can both be called facial cleansers and still need very different packaging. Start with the formula and the way the cleanser should dispense

For a thicker cleanser, a cosmetic tube is often the first direction to compare
For a thicker gel cleanser, cream cleanser or paste-like formula, a cosmetic tube can be a practical starting point because the user squeezes the flexible tube body directly. The formula does not first have to travel through a complete pump mechanism.
That does not mean “thick formula = tube” is a universal rule. The real questions are whether the product can be squeezed comfortably, whether the outlet gives useful control, and whether residue remains around the closure after use.

For a more fluid cleanser, both a tube and a pump bottle may be valid
When the cleanser has medium or relatively good flow, packaging options usually become broader. It is still not accurate to say that a thinner cleanser automatically belongs in a pump bottle.
If the intended experience is to pick up the pack, open it and squeeze out the product, a tube can still be a good fit. If the product is intended to sit on a counter and dispense with one hand, a standard pump bottle becomes more relevant.
The useful dividing line is therefore not simply tube for thick / pump for thin. It is how the brand expects the cleanser to be used.
If portability matters, a tube is usually a practical place to start
For a travel cleanser, gym cleanser or compact daily face wash, a cosmetic tube is often worth comparing early. It can be lighter and more compact than a bottle with a projecting pump, and it is easier to build several portable capacities around the same general packaging direction.
As the product is used, a flexible tube also occupies less volume than a rigid bottle that keeps its full external shape. That can be useful for wash bags and travel-oriented formats.

If the product should sit on a counter and dispense with one hand, compare a standard pump bottle
A standard pump bottle creates a different use pattern from a tube. The user does not squeeze the package; the pump system meters and moves the cleanser.
Once a project moves toward pump dispensing, the key checks also change. Review priming, repeat dispensing, pump return, the formula’s movement through the flow path, dip-tube fit, bottle-neck and closure fit, and leakage after filling.
Pump output should be confirmed for the actual project rather than chosen from one universal “ideal dose.” Different pumps, formulas and product positions can require different output. Being able to dispense once is only the first check; it does not prove that the pump and formula are ready for production.
Very dense formulas, visible particles or suspended material deserve earlier testing because the formula must move through the pump flow path consistently.

If the cleanser should come out as foam, evaluate a foaming bottle
If the brand wants the user to press once and receive foam rather than the original liquid or gel, the decision changes from ordinary dispensing to a foaming dispensing system.
A foaming bottle is not simply a standard pump bottle with a different-looking head. The formula and the foaming mechanism have to work together to create the intended foam. A cleanser does not become a suitable foaming cleanser just because it is relatively fluid.
Check the real formula for priming, foam formation, foam consistency over repeated strokes, pump return, post-use seepage, material compatibility and the final sealed pack.
The more useful question is not “Is the cleanser thin?” but “Should the user receive the original formula or pre-formed foam?”

Standard pumps and foaming pumps solve different jobs

Its job is to move the original cleanser through the pump in a controlled, repeatable way.
Foaming bottle
Its job is to dispense the formula and create the intended foam during use.
So “I need a cleanser bottle with a pump” is not enough information. The more useful next question is whether the finished product should come out as liquid or gel, or as foam.
For a more coordinated premium line, pump and foaming bottles can be strong options
If the project puts more emphasis on countertop presentation, one-hand dispensing, a coordinated bottle family and a more complete component system, a standard pump bottle or foaming bottle can be worth comparing early.
Bottle shape, pump, collar, overcap, color, surface finish and artwork can be coordinated across several SKUs. A foaming cleanser can also make the dispensing experience itself part of the product concept.
However, a pump does not automatically make a product premium, and a tube is not automatically basic. A well-proportioned tube with suitable material, decoration and artwork can also fit a premium skincare line. The better rule is to choose the package around the desired use experience and then build the visual system around the confirmed structure.
Do not use “thick” and “thin” as the only packaging rule
Formula texture matters, but it is only the first layer of the decision. A useful shortlist also considers the desired dispensing action, approximate dose, use setting, portability, outlet or pump compatibility and filling route.
Thicker formula → put a tube near the front of the shortlist.
Moderate or good flow → compare tube and standard pump options.
Pre-formed foam is part of the product experience → evaluate a foaming system with the real formula.
This gives buyers a practical direction without turning packaging selection into a rigid formula rule.
Choose capacity after the packaging direction is reasonably clear
Starting with “I need 100ml” and then searching every packaging category for a 100ml option is not always the most efficient route. First narrow the decision to tube, standard pump or foaming system, then select a capacity from the real model family.
The same nominal capacity can have very different height, diameter, tube length, pump and dip-tube combinations, artwork area and secondary-packaging needs. A 100ml tube and a 100ml pump bottle are not interchangeable packages.
