
PCR and sugarcane-based PE are often placed under the same “sustainable tube” label, but they are not the same kind of material decision. PCR is about using post-consumer recycled content. Sugarcane-based PE is about using a renewable feedstock to make new polyethylene.
That difference matters because the right choice depends on what the packaging brief is trying to achieve. If the priority is recycled content, PCR is the more direct route. If the priority is renewable feedstock while staying with PE, sugarcane-based PE is the more direct route. Neither material name, by itself, proves that the finished tube is recyclable in every market.
Start with the material goal

Sugarcane-based PE is still polyethylene. The feedstock changes, but the polymer remains PE. That is why it should not be described as biodegradable simply because the source material comes from sugarcane.
The same caution applies to PCR. “Contains PCR” is a useful recycled-content statement when it is accurate, but it is not the same as saying the complete decorated tube is recyclable.
Choose PCR when recycled content is the main requirement

PCR is the clearer first option when the project specifically wants post-consumer recycled content in the tube body and the chosen LumLun model supports it.
For suitable LumLun tube projects, 30% PCR can be a practical starting direction. Some projects can review higher proportions, including the 30–50% range, but that range is not an industry-wide optimum and it is not a general regulatory threshold. The right percentage has to be confirmed on the actual tube.
As PCR content increases, some projects may see more variation in base color or surface appearance. That does not make a higher percentage “bad,” but it does mean the PCR level, color and finish should be reviewed together. A very light color target, for example, may need more attention than a darker or more forgiving finish.
Treat the PCR percentage as a specification, not as a score
A higher PCR percentage is not automatically a better packaging choice. What matters is whether the selected tube can support that percentage while still meeting the project’s appearance, processing and documentation requirements.
If the tube model changes later, the PCR option should be confirmed again. A material specification that works on one diameter, closure or tube structure should not simply be copied to another model without checking that the same option is available.
If the project needs a specific recycled-content claim or supporting documents for a particular market, that requirement should also be checked against the selected material. The word “PCR” alone does not replace project-specific documentation.
Choose sugarcane-based PE when renewable feedstock is the priority
Sugarcane-based PE is a good option to compare when the project wants a bio-based feedstock while staying within a PE material platform. The most accurate terms are bio-based PE or sugarcane-based PE.
It should not be described as biodegradable or compostable unless there is specific evidence for the material and finished package. Feedstock source and end-of-life behavior are separate questions, and mixing those ideas can create claims that are harder to support.
Recyclability has to be considered for the finished tube, not just the tube body
A cosmetic tube includes more than its flexible body. The shoulder, cap, nozzle, pump or applicator, barrier layer, inks, coatings, foil and labels can all affect how the finished package fits a recycling stream.
That is why neither PCR nor sugarcane-based PE should be used as a shortcut for saying every finished tube is recyclable. Design-for-recycling guidance, including RecyClass guidance, looks at packaging features and components together rather than judging the body material in isolation.
For a real project, it is more useful to ask how the selected tube is constructed, what components and decoration it uses, and which market the recyclability claim is intended for.
Keep material options tied to verified LumLun models

LumLun currently has tube models recorded as PE / sugarcane PE / PE with PCR, while other models are recorded only as PE / sugarcane PE. Examples include the 35mm teardrop-cap tube and the 25mm eye-cream squeeze tube. The 25mm pump cosmetic tube is currently recorded as PE / sugarcane PE rather than PCR.
That difference is important. It shows why a material option should not be copied from one tube to another just because the products look similar. Choose the actual tube first, then confirm the material, capacity, closure or applicator, color and decoration available on that model.
Decoration can affect the recycling picture too
Printing and decoration still matter after the body material is selected. Inks, coatings, metallic decoration, labels and other additions can affect design-for-recycling compatibility depending on the package and recycling stream.
This does not mean a PCR or sugarcane-based PE project has to avoid decoration. It simply means the material choice and decoration plan should be reviewed together instead of assuming that the tube-body material settles the end-of-life question by itself.
Color can make material differences easier to see
Material changes are sometimes easier to notice in very light or uniform colors than in darker or more forgiving finishes. That is one reason to compare the intended color together with the material instead of approving the material in isolation.
If the project uses several tube sizes, it is also worth checking whether the chosen material and color direction remains consistent across the actual models. The goal is not perfect theoretical uniformity; it is a finished range that meets the agreed visual standard on the tubes being ordered.
Appearance and price depend on the complete specification
There is no reliable universal rule that PCR is always more expensive or that sugarcane-based PE is always cheaper. Cost depends on the selected tube model, material specification, quantity, closure or applicator and decoration.
The same applies to appearance. PCR may require more attention to base color and visible variation. Sugarcane-based PE still needs to be checked with the chosen color, printing and finish. Neither route should be presented as automatically more premium, more marketable or better for sales.
A simple way to decide
- Recycled content is the main goal: start with tube models that support PCR.
- Renewable feedstock is the main goal: start with models that support sugarcane-based PE.
- Neither is a firm requirement: conventional PE can remain in the comparison.
- For any option: look at the finished package before making recyclability claims.
If two materials both meet the brief, compare them on the same tube style whenever possible. That gives you a clearer view of color, finish and overall package differences.
