If your project has already chosen airless packaging, bottle size should not be selected by a shortcut such as “serum = 30ml” or “cream = 50ml.” The better starting point is the target fill volume and the real bottle families that can support it.
A capacity label is important, but it does not tell you the whole package. Two 50ml airless bottles can have different external dimensions, different pump specifications and very different size ranges within the same design family.

Start with target fill, not a product-name rule
Capacity guides often associate 15ml, 30ml, 50ml or 100ml with particular product types. Those examples can help with orientation, but they should not become a fixed purchasing rule.
Two brands can both need a 30ml pack while requiring very different bottle proportions, pump behavior or product-line relationships. Start with the amount the SKU is actually intended to contain, then remove model families that do not offer that capacity.

The same 50ml can have a very different external package
Capacity is not the same as external package size. A slim, tall 50ml bottle and a wider 50ml bottle may contain the same nominal volume while using different heights, diameters, outer-wall structures, actuators or overcaps.
That difference matters when the pack must fit a carton, gift set, retail display or coordinated product line. It also changes the available decoration area and the way several SKUs look next to one another.
Once two candidates both meet the required capacity, compare their actual dimensions and proportions instead of continuing to compare the “50ml” label.

Capacity and pump output are separate specifications
Capacity answers one question: how much product the pack is intended to hold. Pump output answers another: how much the selected pump is designed to dispense per full actuation.
One cannot be reliably calculated from the other. A 30ml bottle does not automatically use a low-output pump, and a 100ml bottle does not automatically use a high-output pump.
For a real project, evaluate target fill + intended amount per use + the actual pump system. Avoid turning capacity into a fixed promise about number of uses or days of use unless the pump output and fill specification are known.
Think in size families, not isolated bottles
Suppose the first SKU needs 30ml. Many individual bottles may satisfy that requirement. But if the next products are planned at 50ml and 100ml, the more useful question becomes:
Does the same bottle family also offer 50ml and 100ml?
A family that covers the planned capacities gives the brand a consistent starting point for body shape, pump style, overall proportion and decoration direction. This does not mean every SKU must look identical; it simply makes the product-line decision visible before the first bottle is locked.

When 100ml, 150ml or 200ml starts to make sense
A larger format becomes relevant when the target fill requirement exceeds what the smaller shortlisted families can provide. It is not automatically more premium, more economical or better for a particular formula.
If the project needs 150ml, a family that ends at 50ml cannot solve that SKU no matter how suitable its appearance may be. The shortlist should move to real families that include 150ml, then compare the actual dimensions, pump and other confirmed specifications of those models.

Plan several SKUs as one product line

If visual continuity matters, staying within one family can make proportions and component language easier to coordinate. If different SKUs genuinely need different structures, using more than one family can also be the right decision. The useful point is to make that choice deliberately rather than discover the mismatch later.

Use a six-step shortlist for airless bottle size
- Define the target fill volume. Decide the amount the SKU actually needs to contain.
- Keep only real families that offer that capacity. Do not assume a photographed model can be resized freely.
- Compare external dimensions and proportion. Same capacity can occupy a very different physical footprint.
- Check the actual pump output. Do not infer dose from bottle capacity.
- Look ahead to future SKU sizes. See whether the family supports the planned capacity ladder.
- Apply any existing hard requirements. Material, structure or appearance requirements should filter the real shortlist; they should not be invented after the fact.
Once the size shortlist is clear, compare formula fit, material and customization within the real models that remain. Those decisions belong to the shortlisted model specifications rather than to the capacity number itself.
