If you are comparing a cosmetic bottle, fine mist sprayer, lotion pump or cap, you may see codes such as 20/410, 24/410, 24/400 or 28/410. They are not bottle capacities and they do not tell you how much a pump dispenses.
The short answer is simple: the first number identifies the nominal outside thread diameter, while the second number identifies the neck-finish series. A 20/410 and a 24/410 therefore use the same 410 finish family but different nominal thread diameters.
The useful part for a packaging buyer is not memorising the code. It is knowing what the code proves, what it does not prove, and when the complete bottle-and-closure assembly still needs to be checked.

What Does 20/410 Mean?
In 20/410, the number 20 refers to the nominal outside diameter of the threaded neck, measured across the outside of the threads. In packaging drawings this outside thread diameter is commonly called the T dimension.
The number 410 identifies the finish series. Industry neck-finish charts describe 410 as a continuous-thread finish with a different thread height and engagement from 400 or 415 finishes.
So when a fine mist sprayer is specified as 20/410, the code is mainly telling you which bottle-neck interface the sprayer closure is designed to match. It does not tell you the spray pattern, output per actuation, dip-tube length or formula compatibility.
What Does 24/410 Mean?
24/410 is read in exactly the same way. The 24 refers to a nominal outside thread diameter of about 24 mm, while 410 identifies the finish series.
The first practical difference between 20/410 and 24/410 is therefore the neck diameter. A 20/410 bottle and a 24/410 pump or sprayer are not the same interface simply because both codes end in 410.
That does not make one size better than the other. Neck finish is an interface specification, not a quality grade.

A larger first number does not automatically mean a better package, a stronger seal or a higher pump output. It only changes the nominal neck size within the specified finish family.
Why Are 24/400 and 24/410 Different If Both Start With 24?
This is one of the most common sources of confusion. 24/400 and 24/410 share the same nominal diameter, but they are different finish series.
The finish series changes the thread geometry and engagement. For that reason, a 24/400 closure should not be treated as interchangeable with a 24/410 bottle neck simply because both begin with 24.
A particular unmatched combination may appear to start threading, but that is not the same as a correctly seated, properly sealed and approved closure assembly. For purchasing and production, match the complete code, not only the first number.
Does 24/410 Mean the Inside Opening Is Exactly 24 mm?
No. The first number is tied to the outside thread diameter, not the internal opening through which product is filled or dispensed.
Packaging drawings use a separate internal dimension for the neck opening. Standard neck-finish charts distinguish the outside thread diameter from the inside diameter, which is why a 24/410 code alone cannot tell you the exact internal opening. This matters when the project has filling-tube, insert, fitment or other internal-clearance requirements. In those cases, use the selected bottle’s technical drawing rather than estimating the opening from the 24/410 code.
Does a 24/410 Pump Dispense More Than a 20/410 Pump?
Not necessarily. Neck finish and pump output are different specifications.
The neck finish tells you how the closure connects to the bottle. The amount released per full actuation depends on the specific pump mechanism and model. Two pumps can use the same 24/410 neck finish and still have different outputs.

Why Do Fine Mist Sprayers Also Use Codes Like 20/410 and 24/410?
A fine mist sprayer still needs a closure that attaches to the bottle. That is why sprayer specifications often include a neck-finish code.
A 20/410 fine mist sprayer is therefore not a statement about mist quality. It is first a statement about the closure interface. Two 20/410 sprayers can still differ in actuator, nozzle, pump mechanism, dip tube, output and spray pattern.

How Can You Check the Match Without Turning It Into an Engineering Exercise?
You do not need to measure every thread dimension yourself before asking a packaging supplier. Start with the information that is actually useful:
- The bottle’s complete neck-finish code, such as 20/410 or 24/410.
- The closure, pump or sprayer’s required neck finish.
- The exact bottle and dispenser model when a drawing or product reference is available.
If the bottle and closure are being sourced as one existing assembled model, the supplier should already have the intended component pairing. If components come from different sources, confirm the technical drawings or physical samples before approving production.
The photograph of a pump head is not enough. Two closures can look almost identical from the outside while using different thread or attachment specifications.
